Based in New Orleans, Louisiana USA, the New Orleans Hornets are a qualified basketball team which plays in the Southwest Division of the NBA (National Basketball Association). Originally known as Charlotte Hornets, the franchise had begun playing during the 1988-89 NBA season and remained located in Charlotte, North Carolina until the end of the 2001-02 NBA season.
In 1985, the NBA decided to expand by four teams. An entrepreneur, George Shinn, who wanted to bring NBA to the Charlotte area, assembled a group of well-known local businessmen and headed the prospective franchise.
On April 5, 1987, Charlotte Hornets was awarded the twenty-fourth franchise of the NBA and it started playing in 1988. While Hornets continued to put a competitive team on the court, their attendance fell radically, mainly because Shinn was now a pariah in the city. The Hornets were now ranked at the bottom of the league in attendance. Shinn finally decided that the Hornets would leave town unless the city built a new arena at no cost to him. Initially the city refused, leading Hornets to move to New Orleans.
On October 30, 2002, the Hornets opened their introductory season in New Orleans. In over 17 years, it was the first season NBA played in New Orleans. Though they were able to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth straight year in 2002-03, they were defeated by Philadelphia in the first round.
With a record of 56-26, the Hornets completed the regular season making it their most successful ever. Winning the Southwest Division, they also won their first ever division title.
